Campaign # 117: Vote YES on 4 (Second Chances) in FL
Did you know that current Florida law excludes 1.4 million people from voting for life, because of a previous felony conviction? These are Floridians who have completed the full terms of their sentence.
That’s 1.4 million people including nearly 10,000 military veterans all who have done their time and paid their debt, but still can’t vote due to Florida’s broken system. The total number of military veterans in Florida who have lost their eligibility to vote over the decades and are currently unable to vote is much higher. Florida is one of only four states with a lifetime ban on voting.
Amendment 4
This November 6th, the ballot in Florida will include Amendment 4 which will, if passed, restore the eligibility to vote to Floridians who have served their time and completed all terms of their sentence as ordered by a judge – including parole, probation, and restitution. The amendment specifically excludes those individuals who have committed murder or a felony sexual offense.
Florida’s system for restoring a person’s eligibility to vote is broken. Amendment 4 takes important steps towards fixing it. Current law imposes a difficult process to restore an individual’s eligibility to vote which is why Amendment 4 is so important.
Non-Partisan
We will be writing to voters in Florida on a non-partisan basis. That’s because Floridians from all walks of life believe in forgiveness, redemption, restoration and, ultimately, second chances. This means no mention of “Democrat” or anything associated with the Democratic Party. No donkeys. No overt or obvious images, themes, or phrasing that would be judged as partisan.
Floridians across the Sunshine State signed and submitted more than 1.1 million petitions and put Amendment 4 – the Voting Restoration Amendment – on the November ballot. They took matters in their own hands to ensure that their fellow Floridians, family members, and friends who’ve made past mistakes, served their time and paid their debts in full are given a second chance and the opportunity to earn back their eligibility to vote.
Now, let’s lend a hand to boost winning turnout so that enough Floridians from all walks of life vote YES on 4 to make sure that Florida law offers real second chances, too.
