Campaign #193 is for Ammar Campa-Najjar in CA
When is a primary not a primary? When it’s a “jungle primary” where the top two vote-getters advance to the November ballot.
California’s “jungle primary” system allows all registered voters to vote in the same primary, and the top 2 vote-getters advance to the November general election. Postcards to Voters doesn’t normally write in primary elections. In the case of California’s 50th Congressional District, since there is only one Democrat running against multiple Republicans, it is critically important to boost Democratic voter turnout. Otherwise, CA-50 voters might only have 2 Republicans on the ballot this Fall.
The 50th Congressional District in Southern California presents a chance to pick up a seat that has been untouchable for nearly two decades. The ruby-red district hasn’t elected a Democrat to Congress since 2000. Democratic challenger Ammar Campa-Najjar has a golden opportunity following the resignation of former incumbent Duncan Hunter. You may recall that when we wrote for Ammar in 2018, he came within 3% of defeating Hunter and winning this seat.
Hunter’s troubles began when he was indicted by a federal grand jury last year for extensive campaign finance violations. According to the indictment, he and his wife, Margaret, “knowingly conspired with each other” to divert $250,000 in campaign funds for personal use, including an Italian vacation, dental work and – wait for it – plane tickets for his pet rabbit! And for good measure, the indictment also included multiple allegations of extramarital affairs.
Incredibly, when presented with the charges, he denied everything and blamed it all on his wife. This strategy backfired spectacularly when she agreed to testify against him as part of her plea deal. Rather than face a high-profile public trial, Hunter also chose to plead guilty and resign – eventually.
Even in this era of polarized politics, the conservative constituents of San Diego may appreciate that it’s time for a change. Campa-Najjar offers a genuine alternative to Republican politics as usual. He is a young, energetic progressive who has dedicated his entire adult life to public service, including a position in Obama’s White House. He was born and raised in the district by his working-class, Mexican mother.
The field of Republican candidates vying for Hunter’s seat, including longtime former congressman Darrel Issa, believes that the constituents in the 50th district will quickly forget about Hunter and his epic ethical transgressions. Now is the chance for CA-50 voters to show that they are committed to electing civil servants who tell the truth, obey the law, and fight for the needs of working-class Americans.
GOP party registration in the district runs about 3 to 2 over Democrats, and another 2 parts independent. As of a recent poll in the district, Campa-Najjar tops the list of contenders at 26%, with Republicans Carl DeMaio, a former San Diego City Councilman, former Congressman Darrell Issa, and State Sen. Brian Jones trailing, but together out-polling the Democrat.
We have a very big list for this election. The stakes are high and the number of voters we need to either vote by mail or in person is high. Remember how great it felt to flip all of those California Congressional Districts in 2018? Well, this is work we need to do to keep CA-50 in play for 2020.
Write on! ~Tony The Democrat
