Campaign #176 is for Herb Jones in Virginia
There are 40 seats in Virginia’s Senate. Republicans are entering the election with the slimmest of majorities in both the House and the Senate chambers. Virginia has been receiving lots of national attention because of the four states with legislative elections in a month, theirs have the highest odds of changing hands.
We’ve been asked to help Democrat Herb Jones who is running against the Republican Senate Majority Leader.
Herb is a retired U.S. Army Colonel who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. He is a former three-term New Kent County Treasurer as well as a small business owner. Throughout his career in business, politics, and in the military, Herb has always answered the call to serve and has never backed down. Which is why he is now taking on Senator Tommy Norment.
The Opponent
Norment is the Senate Majority Leader in Virginia and has spent over twenty years in office without a serious challenger. The voters of the 3rd district are tired of Tommy playing politics with their lives, raising taxes, neglecting our firefighters and first responders, and using his office for personal gain. Recently, in the wake of the Virginia Beach shooting, Tommy led the charge to adjourn and end the special session dedicated to finding common sense solutions to gun violence.
The contrast could not be clearer. Herb is a real and proven leader willing to do the right thing while his opponent is unwilling to fight for the people of Virginia.
Here are some examples of legislation that Republican Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment has supported or opposed:
- Norment proposed a bill lowering the mandatory sentence for those found guilty of possessing child pornography.
- As Senate Majority Leader, he ended the Special Session on Gun Legislation which would have provided Virginians gun safety measures and helped stopped gun violence.
- Refused to allow the Virginia General Assembly to expand Medicaid for 5 years forfeiting $2 billion in Federal Funds and access to healthcare for 400,000 Virginians.
The 3rd Senate District deserves someone like Herb who will fight for them and put the people first. Herb’s election is crucial in not only gaining control of the Senate but unseating the Senate Majority Leader who has consistently blocked progress in Virginia. Herb would be the first African American to serve in Senate District 3 if elected. Herb Jones has spent a lifetime serving others and wants to bring new energy into the General
Assembly.

As the former Treasurer for New Kent County, I have heard what issues people are facing and have seen how important it is to invest resources to help our families. Together we can we can work to find solutions to even the toughest problems. This is the most important election in the history of Virginia.”

Senators in Virginia serve for four years. The incumbent won in 2015 with 69.7% of the vote. A lot has happened since then. Herb and his team have been hard at work for months. They’re doing everything in the campaign playbook to let voters know who he is and why he deserves their vote. Now, it’s up to us to get fun, friendly election reminders in every Democratic voter’s mailbox.
