Campaign #108 is for Aftab Pureval running for Congress from Ohio’s 1st

If you were to pick the “dream” campaign for Postcards to Voters, it might be a U.S. Congressional race that hasn’t quite made national headlines yet. One that several respected outlets including Real Clear Politics and Cook Report have recently updated from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-up.” A contest in a district that Trump won by 6 points the same time a local Democrat won for County Clerk for the first time in 100 years.

What you might not do, though, is pick a Democrat with a name like Aftab Pureval for a Republican, gerrymandered district in SW Ohio. Aftab means sunshine, as the candidate often explains.

Let’s learn some more about what makes this opportunity such a sunny one for Postcards to Voters.

Aftab isn’t a national media celebrity, but he is well known in his own district, Ohio’s 1st. He made local headlines for being the first Democrat in 100 years to be elected Hamilton County Clerk. He then became the first officeholder in Ohio to offer paid family leave to government employees. Through other reforms in the Clerk’s office, he saved taxpayers $900,000 in less than two years.

Speaking of dreams, Aftab is living the American dream. His mother escaped on foot from Tibet and Communist persecution. She met Aftab’s father in India while she attended university. After relocating to America and having Aftab, their son attended the University of Ohio where he became student body president. He went on to receive his law degree from the University of Cincinnati. In D.C., Aftab worked pro-bono for battered women.

Aftab said when he announced his candidacy, “Donald Trump is not on the ballot in 2018. But, members of Congress…who have been doing his bidding without objection…they are on the ballot in 2018.”

The incumbent in Ohio’s 1st Congressional District has voted in line with Trump 94.9% of the time including to take away coverage from those with pre-existing conditions. He’s been in office for 22 years and has nothing to show for it.

Obama won this district in 2008 and has endorsed Aftab. With so many other elections seeing swings of 12-18 points this past year, we could be part of another stunning upset victory.
