We know that Louisiana has “primary” elections in October. They utilize a two-round electoral system in which the names of all eligible candidates are printed on the primary ballot. If a candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote in the primary, he or she is elected. If no candidate wins an outright majority in the primary election, a runoff election is held between the top two vote-getters. This system is sometimes referred to as a jungle primary or majority electoral system. So, while we avoid writing in primaries between two or more true blue Democrats, in this case, it’s one Democrat versus multiple Republicans.

About Lori

In State House District 71, three Republicans will be on the ballot with sole Democrat Lori Callais. She’s a retired teacher ready to challenge the status quo. Lori is a graduate of the Emerge Louisiana program which is the state’s premier organization that recruits, trains and provides a powerful network to Democratic women who want to run for office.

In Lori’s own words

“I spent my life teaching and fighting for my students’ right to a good education. As the president of the local teachers’ union, I fought for the rights of teachers in our parish. I know that education is the foundation we need if Louisiana is going to succeed, so I’m running because our children and teachers need someone who will put them first, not special interest groups and big corporations. I still want to give back to my community by being a full-time legislator who will ask questions and deliver for the people in my district and our state. I’ve always taught my children and students that if we see something that needs to be changed, then we have to change it; that’s why I’m running to be that change in Louisiana in 2019.”

Her Opponents

It should come as no surprise that her Republican opponents have very conservative views. Here are some direct quotes from two of Lori’s opponents’ own mailers and social media:

  • “I will fight hard to keep the liberals in Washington D.C. from imposing on our liberties.” – Jonathan Davis, anti-choice Trumper
  • “I will draft a law immediately after being seated that requires all public school athletes in the state wishing to compete in sports, to do so as their birth gender or not compete…and use only the restroom at school and in public buildings that corresponds to your birth gender.” – Robert Poole

There’s a terrific write-up on Lori at the following link from her interview with Adam James from Majority 60: http://bit.ly/2lMV71R

Lori’s local paper published her statement introducing herself to voters. You can read it here: http://bit.ly/2kFU0Rq

When she wins, it will be a flip for this seat. The question will be can she win 50% plus one on October 12 or can she get into the top 2 to stand again for election in November’s General Election? We hope you’ll help now to secure one of those two outcomes.

Thanks and write on!
